The Whitsuntide + Baroque Festival 2006 is devoted entirely to works by these composers, both masters, each very different. The programme includes three of George Frideric Handel's epoche-making oratorios; cantatas, motets and concertos by Bach as wll as the universe in sound of the Goldberg Variations and thus gives audiences the change to make an enlightening encounter. During their lifetime the composers never met each other but in Salzburg we can meet them both: Handel and Bach.

Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) - DAS ALEXANDER FEST
Ode zu Ehren der Heiligen Caecilia in zwei Teilen
Großes Festspielhaus
Introduction
Gottfried van Swieten, Prefect of the Imperial Library in Vienna, used to organise Sunday morning concerts and it was here that Mozart became acquainted with early music. In a letter to his father in Salzburg he wrote, "Only music by Handel and Bach is played". Mozart himself arranged and performed four oratorios by George Frideric Handel, including Alexander's Feast in July 1790. At the time concert programmes consisted almost exclusively of world premieres and first performances and it was believed that audiences would only accept Handel's works if they were modernised and adapted to contemporary taste - historical performance practice in a different guise.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - BACH and SONS
Mozarteum
Introduction
"If ever there were a family in which an excellent disposition towards one and the same art seemed to be inherited, then it was certainly the Bach family", declared Johann Nikolaus Forkel, author of the first biography of Bach. Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra have long been committed to performing the music of this family cosmos. In their truly encyclopaedic concert and recording projects they explore the life work of the Thomas cantor in Leipzig and make an intensive study of the excitingly unconventional and pioneering compositional art of his sons.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) CLAUDIO ABBADO I
Großes Festspielhaus
Introduction
"It is not a habit to found an orchestra", says Claudio Abbado, "but a necessity". He is the "father" of the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber and the Lucerne Festival Orchestras, and now in Bologna he has founded the Orchestra Mozart. This is an international ensemble of young top-class musicians up to the age of 25 who specialise in the art of performing Mozart. The first concert in November 2004 was enthusiastically acclaimed and the enraptured audience was rewarded for their applause with six encores. The success story is set to continue at Whitsun 2006 with two concerts in Salzburg.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) CLAUDIO ABBADO II
Mozarteum
Introduction
How can an ideal interpretation of Mozart be achieved? For Claudio Abbado it centres on the meticulous study of the work: "I start working by reading the score as if it were a book, from beginning to end". Abbado's interpretations of Mozart's music, their vitality and emotional warmth are more "than merely spirited musicianship", was the verdict of the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper; "they are the result of a precise reading of the notes and a radical approach to their musical performance. Abbado has analysed the findings of historical performance practice and conveyed many of his insights to his orchestra. Yet it is still perceivable that he feels close to Brahms and the music of Verdi".

Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) DER MESSIAS
Großes Festspielhaus
Oratorium in drei Teilen
Introduction
According to Mozart's early biographer, Georg Nikolaus Nissen, Handel's works were "too plain for the capricious fashionable tastes of our time". Nissen was not alone in his unequivocal verdict. Thus Mozart was acting perfectly in keeping with the times when in spring 1789 he arranged Handel's Messiah and gave it a new orchestration, writing detailed instructions on how certain passages were to be played, abridging the score carefully and touching it up in parts. Mozart's version soon became widely played and helped considerably to make Handel's oratorio popular. Even nowadays Mozart's ingenious interpretation of the Messiah still has the power to fascinate us: Handel's spirit from Mozart's hands.

Domenico Scarlatti FAZIL SAY
Mozarteum
Programm Sonate F-Dur K.378 Sonate d-Moll K.1 Sonate C-Dur K.159
Introduction
A period of only sixty years separated the end of the Great Turkish War and the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1756. The former fear of attack and besiege by Ottoman armies had therefore long been replaced by an alla turca fashion, a predilection for everything
exotic which even found its way into music. We only have to think of The Abduction from the Seraglio or Mozart's Sonata for Piano, K.331 with its final rondo and the hugely popular "Turkish March". The Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say, a mediator between the Orient and the Occident, presents Mozart alla turca and reveals how receptive European musicians were for the charms of the alien, the dreaded and admired civilisation.
